Celebrating Thanksgiving and the Holidays on Kauai!

Celebrating Thanksgiving and the Holidays on Kauai!

What a great day it is here on Kauai! The sun is shining and the lush tropical landscapes really put a smile on our faces as we move about the island. There is also a feeling of gratitude that we are focusing on today, because the Holiday season is here and that brings a lot of excitement to the Garden Island. Yes, we just Enjoyed another Halloween with kids trick-or-treating in costumes and, in just a few weeks people all across the country are gathering with Friends and Family to celebrate Thanksgiving!  That is definitely something to smile about!  :- )

Think back to prior Thanksgivings and all the FUN memories that come to mind. Being with Family and Friends, cooking your favorite recipes in the kitchen, watching your favorite football team score another touchdown – and let’s also remember the all-time favorite A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving where kids of all ages discover the real meaning of community and friendship!  :- )

Today in our first Holiday 2015 Feature Story, we are excited to share Tips for having a Great Thanksgiving here on Kauai AND a Preview of Christmas Activities that are happening this year. We also have the inside scoop on how to prepare a great Thanksgiving meal, which restaurants are having special dinners, and of course… how to get our FAVORITE annual delicacy: Imu Turkey! Just wait till you hear about that!

This year, instead of collecting leaves… let’s collect your suntan lotion and beach gear and spend the day on one of Kauai’s breathtaking beaches. Take a long scenic walk on one of Kauai’s many unique trails. Spend the morning at the spa, the afternoon shopping, the next morning golfing. And let us show you how to spend all your vacations basking in the beauty of Kauai and relaxing on your own lanai!

It is true: Kauai Vacation Rentals & Real Estate, Inc is known around the world for 38+ years of assisting guests in having a wonderful Garden Island getaway at our 200+ accommodations – and we look forward to assisting you too!  So let’s start confirming your next vacation plans today so we can see you here in Paradise!

Enjoy A Delicious, Island-Style Imu Turkey Dinner At Home!

Let’s jump right in and talk about one of Kauai’s most savory secrets: Imu Turkey!  An Imu is an underground oven that has been part of Hawaiian cuisine for centuries. It includes a deep pit about six feet long and four feet wide, with a fire built at the bottom and covered with rocks. These rocks retain heat after the embers burn out and once it becomes really hot, the pit is lined with traditional vegetation including banana leaves and palms.

Then, the magic happens! A fresh turkey from one of Kauai’s local markets is placed into the imu, along with Hawaiian herbs and spices where they Kalua (bake in the steaming process) until the proper meat temperature is achieved. Then, your amazing meal is pulled out of the imu and ready for your Thanksgiving dinner plate where the oh-so-moist turkey slides of the bone and into your watering mouth!

OMG!  That sounds awesome! Imu Turkey absorbs the most exquisite flavors from this method of underground slow-cooking, resulting in a feast with palate-pleasing flavor! YUMMM!

Now here is more great news: How to get your own Imu Turkey!

The Kauai Robotics Aliance is ready to make YOUR Imu Turkey (and other meats of your choosing) for you – and what a great Thanksgiving treat that is!  And it is easy to become part of the tradition!

Just make a reservation by calling (808) 635 7377. Then, for a $25 donation, bring your thawed, un-stuffed turkey (maximum weight of 16 pounds) to the drop-off location at 3504 Ili Road in Kalaheo – on Wednesday, November 25th! The Kauai Robotics Alliance will then transport your turkey to the imu and return it to your drop-off site the next morning.

The annual Imu Turkey Fundraiser is sponsored by the The Kauai Robotics Alliance, which presents educational programs that teach members how to build robots!  How cool is that!?!  Here is even more cool news!

Event organizers Kate Mink and Charlene Steuri told us, if any of our guests want to come out and see how the Imu Turkey cooking process is done, they are welcome to do so!  Just be sure to contact Kate (kauaibots2465@gmail.com) or Charlene (chasteuri@gmail.com) ahead of time!

The cooking team spends all Wednesday preparing the pit and doing the burn, getting the turkeys in the oven around dusk, and then opens the pit a little after dawn the next day. The plan is to have the turkeys out by 10 AM so they can be returned to your drop-off site, where you can pick them up in time for your VERY OWN Imu Turkey celebration!

Here is a recap of the important details:  1) Make a reservation; 2) wrap your turkey, ham, pork butts, and chicken in 2 layers of heavy-duty foil and place into a foil pan; 3) season your feast with spices from one of Kauai’s farmers markets and grocery stores; 4) remove the giblets, add butter, salt – and remember… DO NOT stuff the turkey!  Save your fixins’ for when you get home!  :- )    5) Then drop your turkey off between 1-2 PM on Wednesday, November 25th, at 3504 Ili Road in Kalaheo, c/o James Massaro; 6) Then get ready for an amazing FEAST when you pick up your imu-meal on Thursday, November 26th, 2015 from 9 AM to 10 AM!

Now that sounds amazing – and THANKS to The Kauai Robotics Alliance… you’re all set for a new Kauai Thanksgiving Tradition at your own Kauai Vacation Rentals & Real Estate, Inc accommodation!

Hau'oli La Ho'omaika'i  – Happy Thanksgiving!  Now, make your reservation by contacting kauaibots2465@gmail.com or by calling 808 635 7377!

Everyone on the Garden Island looks forward to this event and this is how you can join the FUN with your Family and Friends.

The Festival of Lights began over 50 years ago on Oahu, then moved to Kauai for the past 19 years. Founded by “Auntie” Josie Chansky, the Festival was once held at her house where she displayed her festive crafts for everyone to Enjoy. In 1996, Auntie Josie had a yard sale and sold her ornaments and decorations. Good thing local artist Elizabeth Freeman bought all of Auntie Josie’s displays and donated them to the County of Kauai, which is how the Festival moved to Lihue in 1996.

What can you see? A Christmas Tree made from 7,500 green toothpicks. Wreaths made of egg cartons. A twinkling carousel and revolving Ferris Wheel crafted to resemble magical treasures of Christmas festivities.  And more!

Friends and visitors from all over the world come to the Festival and depart with their holiday spirits soaring! This year, the Festival of Lights begins Friday, December 4, 2015 and runs the entire month of December on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6 PM to 8 PM. There are plenty of local crafts created by Kauai artisans for you to browse, so come on out and find one-of-a-kind Holiday gifts!

The annual event is sponsored by the County of Kauai, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and the Friends of the Festival of Lights. This is another beautiful reflection of Kauai’s Aloha spirit and the event is FREE!
