2015 Golf & Fun Vacation Guide

Ho`olaule`a – Celebrating 38 Years with a Kauai Golf & Relaxation Tour!

Join us for a moment as we think back on all the FUN things happening in 1978.  “Laverne & Shirley” was the top rated TV show. “MacArthur Park,” written by our friend, Jimmy Web, and sung by Donna Summer, was a top song on the radio. And that was the same year Kauai Vacation Rentals & Real Estate, Inc opened its doors for business!

Funny how so much has changed over the years – and even more impressive… how some things just keep getting better!

That’s right!  Thirty-eight marks the beginning of another great milestone for your Friends here on Kauai. Thirty-eight years of assisting guests in planning their dream vacations. Thirty-eight years of meeting new Friends from around the world – who return year after year to stay with us again. Thirty-eight years of watching their Families grow up and meeting the new Friends they bring to Kauai! And thirty-eight years of our expanding, heart-felt gratitude for making our company known as “the only way to go when coming to Kauai.”

Thank you for all the great memories and especially for all the new ones that are coming! As we “Ho`olaule`a (celebrate) our 38th year of business we are excited to share with you our 2015 Kauai Golf & Relaxation Guide. It is true: every day is a GREAT time to be on Kauai and now is a great time to plan this year’s holiday vacation. So while you read make sure to close your eyes and see yourself outdoors breathing in fresh tropical air, chillaxing under the bright sky, and strolling along a white sandy beach in between swimming, snorkeling, and centering yourself in Paradise!

Seasons are changing all over the world and here on Kauai, today is another beautiful day waiting for you to explore. With flights leaving your local airport and landing at Lihue Airport every day, let’s help you get excited about being on the next one – starting with a tour of Kauai’s amazing golf courses!

The Ultimate Guide to Golf and Relaxation on Kauai: World-Class Courses and Breath-Taking Scenery!

Call your Friends, pack up the Family, grab your clubs, and get ready for an awesome Kauai Vacation Rentals & Real Estate, Inc golf vacation. Kauai has 10 great courses at seven breathtaking locations, many designed by golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.  You can golf all day, have wonderful meals in the evenings, and get a full night of sleep in your relaxing vacation home. Then after a good night’s sleep, you can grab a massage, make plans to attend a luau, and start exploring the Garden Island. Every day can be unique and special, and we have 10 exciting tips on how to maximize your vacation starting with the cool new way of getting around the golf course!

This is the “GolfBoard,” which is developed in part by well known Hawaii big wave surfer, Laird Hamilton. The idea is to add more adrenaline to your round of golf while speeding up the pace of play and attracting more young people to the sport. The fun, battery-operated machine enables surfers to "surf the earth" between shots on an impressively agile set of four wheels.

Travel Weekly featured the new transportation on their website where the creator said, “When you carve left and right down a decent slope, you really get a sensation of snowboarding or surfing or even wakeboarding… and it's very intuitive. It's also easy to learn."  Look for the GolfBoard on Kauai at Princeville Makai Golf Club and see this video for more information!

World-Class Golf at The Makai Golf Club

For one of the most unique golfing experiences in the world, indulge yourself with a round of golf at the Makai Golf Club at The St. Regis Princeville Resort. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course opened in 1971 and had a grand renovation in 2009.
According to the official site, the course “features the introduction of Seashore Paspalum turf grass on all fairways and greens, providing spectacular playing surfaces for golfers of all skill levels. The course plays to a par 72 with four different sets of tees that can be stretched to more than 7,200 yards from the tips – and the signature 7th hole plays to 213 yards from the back tees.

Makai Golf Club rents new Callaway golf clubs for men, women, and juniors looking to play a great course with great equipment. Spend a few days mastering your game amidst scenic cliffs, tranquil lakes, native forests, and spectacular coastline views of Bali Hai and Hanalei Bay. If you’re ready to get your vacation plans started, click here!

Travel Tip #1: The Makai provides an excellent challenge to golfers of all skill levels with its unique terrain and turf. For casual golfers who prefer a leisurely round with Friends and Family, try the 9-hole Woods course! It has a fun and relaxed layout, winding through the native woodlands of Kauai’s North Shore. Makai Golf Club also has a practice tee, fairway bunker, target greens, and short game practice complex. Come and play one of golf’s “Top Five Most Scenic Courses,” according to National Geographic’s Traveler magazine.

Tip #2: For Friends who would rather “chillax” than golf, The Makai Grill offers a perfect hangout spot. Enjoy a delicious lunch and sip tropical beverages while Friends Enjoy their game. Breakfast is served from 7 AM to 11 AM with options that include an omelet of your choice, fruit smoothies, and breakfast sandwiches. Lunch is served from 11 AM to 4 PM with tasty items including a Turkey Cheddar Wrap, the Makai Burger, Classic BLT, Club Sandwiches, and more!

Breathtaking Scenery and Challenging Golf on the South Shore

The Kiahuna Golf Club is another great course designed by world-renowned golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.  Located in Poipu, Kiahuna offers 18-holes with a par 70 and 6,925 yards of play. The lush course is surrounded by Kauai’s natural beauty and weaves through ancient ruins along your way to the final hole. For example, to the left of the fifteenth fairway you’ll see the remains of a house that was inhabited by a Portuguese immigrant in the early 19th century.

The Kiahunua Golf Club is an amazing golf course and the official site has an introduction video by Matt Torey, head golf pro, who introduces the course and shows a great aerial flyover video. To see the clip, click here!

Tip #4: Hawaii’s natural beauty and wildlife are on royal display at Kiahuna! There is a small outcrop of lava tubes to the left of the second fairway. The Club also provides a sanctuary for many of Kauai’s endangered species, including the Nene, the official bird of the State of Hawaii. As you play your round, keep an eye out and see interesting wildlife including the Hawaiian Stilt, the Black-Crowned Night Heron, and the shy Moorhen along the Waikomo Stream!

Tip #5:  Joe’s on the Green is a great place to grab a meal before and after the game. Yummy breakfast items include Cinnamon Rolls, Homemade Tropical Granola, Half Papaya, and Buttermilk Pancakes!  Mmmmmm!  :- )   Lunch specials include the Joe Mama Cheeseburger, Fresh Island Fish Sandwich, BBQ Ribs, Turkey Foccacia, desserts, and Happy Hour from 3 PM to 6 PM.

Need another reason to come? The Kiahuna Golf course has a gentle balance of scenic beauty and challenging golf – and the course’s official site is full of helpful information. Select “The Course” from the website’s top menu and you’ll see a layout of each hole. There are also links to golf tips for each hole and a look inside the pro shop.

Excited?  Awesome! We look forward to seeing you at Kiahuna!

9 Holes on Kalaheo Golf Course Are Fun and Accessible!

One of Kauai’s best value golf courses is the 9-hole Kukuiolono Golf Course in Kalaheo. This semi-private golf course on the South Shore opened in 1928 and is designed by Toyo Shirai.

The course measures 2,981 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 113 and a 70 USGA rating. It also has 2 sets of tees for different skill levels, with greens and fairways grown from Bermuda grass.

Players on Yelp! have said it is the “Best golf value on the island--$9 for a 9-hole round!!  Totaled out at $100 for rentals, balls, tees, carts, and the round, plus a whole lotta fun for all four of us---yes--four!!  Played there many times, and can't remember ever having a better time on a course.”  The small, 9-hole course is settled nicely in the hills above Kalaheo town, near Koloa. It was originally built as the private course of sugar king, Walter McBride.

Tip #6: Today, Kukuiolono is a public course perfect for beginners or a quick round. McBride, who had over 180 acres of land to his name, donated the course to Kauai in 1919. Golfers can give their “Aloha” to his final resting place near the 8th tee.

Tip #7: Near the golf course, there is Kukuiolono Park, which is perfect for guests who want to explore while others golf!  :- )

There is a newly renovated Japanese garden to stroll through, with fountains, statues, and bonsai trees. See garden paths leading to a collection of Hawaiian lava rocks and a newly constructed meditation pavilion. This photo is an ancient stone from the garden!

You can also run/jog on one of the many paved paths and hike trails that showcase the Eucalyptus forest and ironwood trees. You might even see whales in the distance, right from the park!

Sound fun? We think so too! For an ideal day of golfing and spending time outdoors, learn more about Kukuiolono Park here! And, for a video tour of this course, check out this link - Kukuiolono Golf Tour.

Kauai Lagoons – a “Nicklaus-Designed Course” on the East Side!

Kauai Lagoons Golf Club in Lihue features 18-holes of Jack Nicklaus-inspired golf and includes over a ½ mile of breathtaking oceanfront golf on the inward nine. In fact, it is such a great course, here is how the official website describes part of the course:

Measuring 219 yards from the back and requiring a tee shot over a valley of mango and guava trees, the fifth hole tests each golfer’s skill and nerve. This hole is third of a four-hole span, and the Kauai Lagoons golf staff refer to it as the “amen corner” – one you make it past that, say “amen” and keep going!

The course’s links are situated with the coast of the Pacific on one side, and the picturesque mountains of the inner Island on the opposite side.

Tip #8: Kauai Lagoons has had several renovations in the past five years and the new surfaces, bunkers, and three new holes are Fun and breathtakingly beautiful. One of the new holes offers a breathtaking ocean view that joins three other holes to create the longest continuous stretch of ocean holes of any course in Hawaii – with an amazing half mile of ocean vistas!

The Kauai Lagoons official site has more information and there is no fee to set a tee time online. Kauai Lagoons also has a driving range and putting green available to all golfers. Be sure to have a look at the site’s “Outings” and “Improve” sections. Ready to play Mr. Nicklaus’s course? We will see you on the links!

A Place to Call Home: Kauai Vacation Rentals & Real Estate, Inc – and the Puakea Golf Club. A match made in heaven!

Golfers, time to get more exited!  There is yet another world-class course on Kauai’s East Side: The Puakea Golf Club. Golf architect Robin Nelson is quoted saying, “… this might be one of the most fun courses to play in the entire state. The course rides up, then down, and around deep ravines. There are amazing pali views for three quarters of the course and ocean views for the remainder!”  Sounds good to us!  : - )

Tip #9: Puakea is open to the public as a daily fee course and is more economical than other courses on the island. It is built on over 200 acres of historic property, which was formerly a sugarcane plantation. As you play, you see volcanic cliffs, huge ravines, and plush tropical vegetation! Following an extensive renovation in 2003, there is also a state-of-the-art practice facility, complete with a driving range, putting green, and ample short-game practice area.

Ready to book your tee time on Puakea? Click here for more information on tee times, hosting an event or enjoying lunch at the Ho’okipa Café, open from 7 AM to sunset!

Tip #10: If you are looking for more ways of exploring Kauai while your golfers Enjoy their rounds, check out the Royal Coconut Coast for shopping, spas, and historic sight-seeing. You can go to the roadside lookout and see Opaekaa Falls, one of the island’s most accessible waterfalls. You can also rent a kayak and take a tour of the Wailua River! There are all kinds of FUN things to see and do on Kauai’s East Side!
