It is another beautiful day here on The Garden Island and today we are excited to share our latest Feature story: Spending Time Outdoors on Kauai!  It is true: summer is coming and before you know it, the kids will be out of school and it will be time for another great summer vacation! Spending Time Outdoors: Exploring Hanalei on the North Shore

A short drive west of Princeville on Kauai’s North Shore is an amazing little town called Hanalei. The area features a 2-mile, crescent-shaped coastline with a wonderful beach, an historic Pier, and a small town area with great shops, restaurants, and authentic shave ice!

Hanalei Bay Beach Park features multiple lifeguard stations – and local companies in town rent surf boards! You can also find seasonal volleyball, picnic tables, and lots of Fun people who are here to Enjoy another great day on Kauai!

Spending Time Outdoors: Hiking Kokee State Park 

Perfect outdoor weather and hours of great hiking await guests who LOVE getting exercise in the great outdoors!  In fact, Kokee State Park on the island’s West Side has 19 trails to explore! Alakai Swamp Trail is 3.5 miles traveling through the wet forest to the rim of Wainiha Pali.  Canyon Trail is 1.8 miles of popular scenic trail with great views of Waimea and Poomau Canyons; following the rim of Waimea Canyon and crossing Kokee Stream.

Then there is the one and only Waimea Canyon. The Grand Canyon of the Pacific! This canyon is approximately ten miles long and 3,000 feet deep.  “Waimea” is the Hawaiian word for “reddish water,” referring to the visible erosion of the canyon’s red soil.

Another great trail hikers Enjoy is the Pihea Trail, which features 3.7 miles of easy and wide open trails that let you see majestic views of Kalalau Valley.

Spending Time Outdoors Shopping!  Fun Shopping Areas on Kauai!

Hiking Kokee State Park and Relaxing in Hanalei are FUN ways of spending time outdoors AND getting exercise. There is also another FUN thing to do outdoors that everyone seems to love:  SHOPPING!

On Kauai’s East Side, Kapaa has a great shopping area called the Coconut MarketPlace. This unique, open-air center has over 30 quality shops and the mall is expanding in 2016! You’ll find apparel, art galleries, and so much more! 

Located on Highway 56, the MarketPlace is open from 9 AM to 9 PM Monday through Saturday, and 9 AM to 6 PM on Sunday.  There is also a Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 AM to noon.

The Kinipopo Shopping Village in also located on Kauai’s Coconut Coast, about 10 minutes north of Lihue Airport. If you are hungry when you arrive on Kauai, this is a great place to start your Kauai Adventure.

You’ll find Korean BBQ, Monico’s Taqueria, Passion Bakery Café, and Cakes by Kristin. The peaceful tropical garden setting is a great place to relax, have a snack, and scroll our Facebook page for the latest things happening NOW on Kauai!

Another great place for shopping is in Old Koloa Town. Located on Kauai’s South Shore, this former sugar plantation dates back to 1835! See old-fashioned storefronts, explore gift shops, and learn more about the Koloa Heritage Trail, which connects 14 cultural, historical, and geological sites stretching all the way to Poipu. 

The gateway connecting the Koloa / Poipu area is called the “Tree Tunnel” section of Maluhia Road. This picturesque road is lined with eucalyptus trees that were planted more than a century ago.

This boutique shopping destination is located on the South Shore and is also known for having a Fun ambiance at night where you can have a stroll, buy souvenirs and clothing, and Enjoy music while browsing and buying. :- )  The second Saturday of each month features the Art Walk at Kukuiula from 6 PM to 9 PM, where artists showcase their latest works. And every Wednesday from 3:30 PM to 6 PM, come and explore Kauai's premier culinary market with a chef demo at 5 PM.

Back on the North Shore, Hanalei has the Fun shopping area called Ching Young Village in the Heart of Hanalei. The center has a photo gallery, a juice bar, gift shops, Hanalei River Healing & Body Work, Hanalei Surf Backdoor, Kauai Nut Roasters, and many more great places to explore all day!

Spending Time Outdoors:  Kilauea Art Night

Come have Fun on the last Saturday of each month at Kilauea Art Night. Discover locally made pottery, wood work, original fine art, jewelry, organic skincare, handmade soaps, wish trees, apparel, chocolates and more.

Kilauea has a wide variety of food vendors from around Kauai including: The Right Slice, Kickshaws, Porky's Hot Dog Cart, Hanalei Pasta, Akamai Juice, Makai Jellies & Jam, locally made ice cream and more!

Enjoy dinner listening to live music on the grounds of the historic stone building. Be sure to see the Keiki Fire & Light performance at 7 PM on the back lawn!

The FUN happens every last Saturday from 4 PM to 8 PM.

Kauai’s 6th Annual Bicycle Race

Pedal to the Meadow is the official bicycle hill climb race on Kauai. The USAC-sanctioned event is sponsored by the Tradewind Cycling Team and online registration is now open.

If you love biking, you’ll LOVE this race!  It starts on the island’s West Side and climbs along the rim of Waimea Canyon to the Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Kokee State Park.

The scenic and challenging climb starts at sea level and ends deep in the cool wet upland forest in the Garden Island’s interior.

DISTANCE & ELEVATION GAIN: 15.75 Miles & 3,835 Feet – ending at the Banana Poka RoundUp fair, which features a hospitality tent, live music, fun activities for kids, and so much more!

Disney's Beauty and The Beast - Live on Stage

The Kauai Performing Arts Center proudly presents Disney's beloved musical, Beauty and The Beast, LIVE on stage for TWO weekends:  April 24, 25, 26 – and May 1, 2, 3.

Tickets are $10 in advance for adults ($12 at the door). Youth tickets, aged 4-18, are $8 in advance ($10 at the door). Children 3 years and under who accompany a paying adult are FREE! 

Come see the show and re-live the magical story, only at Kauai’s War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue. Don't miss this show!

Fridays and Saturdays the show starts at 7 PM. Sundays at 3 PM. Food is available for sale and all proceeds go to support KPAC live theatre education on Kauai.

Torch Run & Special Olympics Kauai Track and Field Meet

First Hawaiian Bank presents Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run & Special Olympics Kauai Track and Field Meet.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is more than just a run! It is a year round fund-raising organization that culminates at the State Summer Games on Memorial Day weekend – with the Final Leg running into the Opening Ceremonies at the University of Hawaii.

Over 2,500 law enforcement personnel from federal, military, state, county and local agencies participate in the event, with Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Runs throughout the state with “legs” on Kauai, Maui, Hawaii, and Oahu.

The Kauai Food Tour - Royal Coconut Coast

Come join the fun on Thursday, May 14th when The Kauai Food Tour makes its way through the East Side! The official website invites you to “Hop in your car and follow our guide on a tasting adventure through Kauai’s Royal Coconut Coast. Take a short stroll down an old plantation road and learn about taro farming; sample Hawaiian street food and Enjoy tastings at some of the East Side’s best farm-to-table restaurants.”

This food tour is a local favorite that centers on the beauty and creativity of the Royal Coconut Coast.  Tickets for the tour are $120 and include a farm tour, tastings at 5 stops, and a guided tour from experienced guides with plenty of local culinary knowledge.
