The Golf EnthusiastKauai is a Golfer’s dream come true. Every morning, awaken to a new adventure that includes award-winning courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and Robin Nelson – all set amidst lush Garden Island landscapes. As the sun rises, feel the fresh sea breeze heighten your senses while you perfect your game surrounded by breathtaking scenery and ancient Hawaiian history. This is your time to unwind so grab your golf shoes and let’s take a tour of Kauai’s one-of-a-kind courses.
The East Side: A Pair of Oceanside GemsIn Lihue on the East Side is Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, which offers 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus. According to the official website, “The Kiele championship ocean 18 holes takes you through Kauai's own "Amen Corner" playing through mango and guava tree forests. The outward Kiele Mauka Nine [is] the longest stretch of continuous ocean holes on Hawaii with over 1/2 mile of stunning oceanfront golf.”
The Waikahe Nine is another great course that provides a forgiving layout especially suited for juniors, families, or those who are just looking for a relaxing 9 holes of golf. The official website says “at 12 noon, the Waikahe Nine is paired with the Kiele Mauka Nine to create an affordable option to the championship 18 holes.” WOW! Take a look at those pictures! Can you feel how amazing Kauai is?
Also On The East SidePull up to the Puakea Golf Course in Lihue and experience majestic views of the ocean and Mount Haupu. Designed by Robin Nelson, one of Hawaii’s most prolific golf architects, the course plays around deep ravines and mountain water-fed streams. One compelling feature of Puakea is how its play varies day-to-day based on sun, wind, and how much fun you are having. This course is a great location to achieve that awesome birdie! BTW, a birdie is a score of one stroke under par at a hole. :-)
On The South Shore: PoipuPoipu Bay Resort Golf Course is a championship level course on the South Shore, designed by renowned golf architect, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
The course was home to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1994 to 2006 and has won numerous awards. It features a breathtaking view of the rock formation “Mahaulepu,” which is one of the most spectacular and cherished undeveloped coastal areas in the Hawaiian Islands.
Poipu Bay Resort Golf Course features firm fairways that allow the ball to “roll” onto the green. According to the official website, “this outstanding course is backed by lush emerald mountains and sculpted from a rolling plateau eight stories above the Pacific Ocean. Nestled among the gentle contours of Poipu Bay you’ll discover the remains of Hawaiian heiau (places of worship) and ancient stone walls.”
Sounds awesome to us! BTW, the golf carts feature satellite navigation! How cool is that?
The South Shore also has another gem of a course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The Kiahuna Golf Club offers a dazzling, newly renovated 18-hole course that nestles itself right in the heart of Poipu.
Ancient remnants of past Kauai villages weave with the natural scenery to create a unique golfing experience. Also, Kiahuna features Joe’s on the Green, a great place to grab a beverage during the 19th hole! ;-)
On the North Shore: PrincevilleOn the North Shore sits award winning Prince Golf Course at Princeville.
With its setting above the Pacific Ocean with views to the majestic mountains of the north shore of Kauai and the ocean, the Prince Golf Course at Princeville is any golfer’s dream to play, especially after the multi-million dollar renovation overseen by the original architect, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
Named for Prince Albert, son of Hawai’i’s King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, golf at the Prince Course is truly a royal experience. The par-72 course is ranked as Golf Digest’s “#1 Golf Course in Hawaii” and “one of America’s Top 100 Greatest Courses.” It is also named in GolfWeek “America’s “Best 100 Resort Courses” and Golf Magazine “Top 100 Courses.”
What a nice distinction!
Also on the North Shore is the Makai Golf Club at The St. Regis Princeville Resort, considered one of Hawaii’s premier championship layouts with 27 holes of golf in the spectacular Princeville Resort. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the Makai opened in 1971 and has, over the years, been ranked as one of Hawaii’s top golf experiences, appearing on numerous “Top 100” lists.
Renovated and reopened in early 2010, Makai Golf Club features two uniquely individual courses. The 18-hole Makai Course incorporates the original Lakes and Ocean nines, and plays to a par-72 with four sets of tees extending the course to more than 7,200 yards. The 9-hole Woods Course is ideal for the casual golfer who wants to enjoy a leisurely 9-hole round in a relaxed layout. The Woods winds through native woodlands with a backdrop of magnificent mountain views.
Travel Note: Check your airline’s policy regarding golf clubs. Some limit items that can be checked. A hard case is also recommended to protect your clubs. Golf Link has some useful advice regarding clubs here. If you prefer to leave your clubs at home, the golf pro shop at Princeville Makai Golf Club can assist you in finding the perfect set of clubs here on Kauai.
