Mele Kalikimaka - 'Tis the Season for Kauai!

Mele Kalikimaka ... 'Tis The Season - For Kauai!
Can you believe it is Christmas time? It seems like we were just celebrating the start of summer, getting ready for guests from around the world to arrive on the Garden Island for their amazing vacations!  Then, the year kicked into high gear as Kauai Vacation Rentals was featured on HGTV’s “House Hunters on Vacation”; Halloween came and went; and just as we were finishing our Thanksgiving imu turkey dinners – ALOHA! It’s Christmas-time on Kauai and the excitement can be felt everywhere! With so much to prepare for, and so many FUN things to do, we thought to share some of our favorite things about the holiday season on Kauai!

First off, we say Mele Kalikimaka! (which means Merry Christmas!) – and yes, there is a wonderful feeling that comes with giving and receiving gifts. Christmas time on Kauai is also the perfect place to take a moment, breathe in deeply, and reflect on the amazing year 2012 is. And for us at Kauai Vacation Rentals, it is the perfect time to think about the excitement our guests are feeling right now as they are about board their airplanes and fly to Paradise!

This season, Kauai Vacation Rentals is excited to see many familiar faces coming “home” for the holidays – along with new Friends who are bringing their Friends and Families to Kauai for the first time.  And though we don’t have snow covering Kauai’s white sand beaches, we DO have plenty of Christmas spirit and a lot of fun things to do outdoors!  So get your walking shorts packed and grab a new bottle of sunscreen … because it’s time for Christmas on Kauai!

December 7th through the 24th, 2012:  It’s The 16th Annual Festival of Lights

Sponsored by the Hawaii Tourism Board, the 16th Annual Festival of Lights at Kauai's Historic County Building begins with Opening Ceremonies on Friday, December 7th.
This Festival began in 1996 with a focus on preserving Auntie Josie Chansky’s tradition of sharing her Christmas folk art, which she first began sharing 50 years ago.

First on Oahu and then 18 years on Kauai, Auntie Josie opened her home to neighbors, strangers, tourists - everyone and anyone. People just started showing up on her lawn and then at her door. They wanted to see all the Christmas folk art decorations she created and displayed on the outside and inside of her home.  It wasn’t long before Auntie Josie’s home became known as “The Christmas House.”

Generations of families have since made a visit to The Christmas House part of their holiday traditions. Here, they can see favorites such as a Christmas tree made of 7,500 green toothpicks; wreaths formed from egg cartons; table decorations constructed with seed pods; a chandelier fashioned from wire coat hangers; and a must-see decoration titled "Surfin' Santa's Sleigh," which is pulled by a team of wave-riding Kauai roosters.
Festivities begin on Friday the 7th and then the display is open 6 PM to 8 PM Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through December 24th.  For additional information about Kauai's Festival of Lights, visit the official site here!

Sunday December 9, 2012: Let’s Hula for Christmas!

Yes, that’s right! Hula is the theme for Kauai's annual Holiday Hula Christmas Celebration at the Grand Hyatt Kauai in Poipu. The halau is entering its twenty-sixth year with its Hawaiian Holiday Christmas Presentation and this year’s event includes an evening of hula, chant, music, and holiday spirit. With over 150 dancers and musicians in the halau, a great time is waiting for all!

Each year, Kumu Kapu prepares her dancers with a selection of wonderful chants and songs that honor Hawaii’s Ali’i, place names, nature and its elements. Of course, holiday tunes are a must!  Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

Join the festive evening with Halau Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani and their Kumu Hula Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza. Doors open at 5 PM; program begins at 6 PM. Mele Kalikimaka!

December 22nd, 2012: The Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade

Are you ready for the brilliant wonderland of color and the spirit of Kauai fellowship? The annual Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade starts at 6 PM.  Spend the day visiting Waimea’s parks, beaches and hiking trails; browse through Waimea's shops; eat dinner; and stay for the entertainment following the parade at Hofgaard Park.

The Parade is free and visitors are invited to join the colorful community event. Waimea Town, dripping with lights, is a brilliant wonderland of color that serves as a backdrop to the annual Lighted Christmas Parade. After-parade festivities include live, on-stage free music at Hofgaard Park with free beverages, baked goods and treats provided by many WKBPA member businesses.

The parade, held since 1994, begins at Waimea Canyon Park and goes down Kaumualii Highway to Ala Wai Road. It then turns mauka (towards the mountains) to Waimea Road, then back west to end at Hofgaard Park in the center of town. For everyone's safety, no parking is allowed along the Parade Route – and expect traffic into Waimea to be extremely slow. Organizers suggest finding a parade-viewing spot by 4 PM. Parking is easier on the Kekaha side of town, so arrive early!
