Celebrating Thanksgiving – Hau’oli La Ho’omaika’i

Thanksgiving on Kauai is one of our favorite times of the year. Family and friends coming together to share stories of “what’s new” in their lives; taking time to reflect on all the things we are grateful for; and taking time to remember all the adventures we have had over the past year. Holiday planning is lots of fun because the fall and winter seasons are always a great time to have a vacation!

Remember planning your last vacation? Think back, now. The preparation of “where should I go” … “what should I do” … the choices … and getting everyone excited about taking time off!? Then your vacation finally arrived and on that first morning you probably awoke thinking, FINALLY – I am here! Should I sleep in?  Exercise? Have a BBQ?  Call my friends? Swim – or should I just kick back and RELAX all day?

That’s exactly how a vacation is supposed to be – especially when you’re on Kauai. And here’s the great thing: we know exactly how to help you get your “vacation on Kauai” plans started, confirmed, and filled with cool ways to Enjoy activities AND relax. So Much to See, Do and Be Thankful For!

Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Located in the upper part of the archipelago, Kauai is known for having some of the world’s greatest beaches (ranked #2 in the world by US News and World Report) in four breathtaking regions. The North Shore has wonderful spas, amazing restaurants, and top-rated Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed golf courses. The East Side is a good central location with miles of white-sand beaches, and beautiful homes and condos that overlook the crystal-blue Pacific Ocean.

On the South Shore, Enjoy family-friendly beaches where you can swim, snorkel, build sandcastles, and relax under the warm tropical sun! Then there’s the West Side, where you can hike Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), explore Kokee State Park, Enjoy fishing expeditions, and so much more!

Kauai has one main highway that connects the West Side with the “end of the road” on the North Shore – and every place you look along the way is simply breathtaking. Waterfalls, lush green valleys, colorful flowers, ocean vistas, and people all around you with BIG smiles on their faces –thankful they are on Kauai!  To learn more about all the great things to see and do, check out our video library here on YouTube.  Be sure to leave us comments … we love hearing from you! Now let’s talk about Thanksgiving!

Hau’oli La Ho’omaika’i

Pronounced “how-oh-lee la ho-o-my-kah-ee” – what a wonderful way to say “Happy Thanksgiving Day!” – and if you have yet to experience a holiday feast Hawaiian-style, here’s a preview of the Yumminess that awaits you!  For starters, one of the traditional ways to cook a turkey on Kauai is in an imu: an underground oven often used to roast pig for luaus. OMG – when you and your family sit down for this year’s turkey, get ready to throw your head back and say YUM! The meat is moist and tender, especially when roasted with lemon, garlic, and pineapple; and basted with soy sauce.

Fans of imu cooking know this turkey dinner doesn't have to be carved because the meat slides right off the bone!

Kauai Thanksgiving dinner often includes fresh fish, Japanese rice, Portuguese sausage stuffing, and Okinawan sweet potatoes. This flavorful mix of traditions blends into a perfect meal that will keep you thinking of Kauai all the way to Christmas! (We are still thinking about how AWESOME last year’s feast was!)

Make Dinner Your Yourself, or Reserve a Table!

When you are staying in a Kauai Vacation Rentals accommodation, you have SO many choices! You can choose from casual locations to more high-end dining. Kauai’s hotels and restaurants are already planning their special Thanksgiving sittings, including the Beach House in Poipu, The St. Regis Princeville Resort, and The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas. You can also shop at the wonderful local farmers markets and prepare your own feast in the comfort of your own home! Whichever you choose, be sure to plan ahead. Many restaurants are booked in advance for specific holiday buffet schedules.

A growing trend is to celebrate on one of Kauai's beautiful beaches. Just pack a picnic basket, grab a few beach towels, and bring your meal (or left overs) down to the sand! Just think… while others are sitting around the table waiting for desert, you’ll be snacking and sunbathing on white sandy beaches!

Another great thing about being on Kauai for Thanksgiving is the way “gratitude” fills every day of your vacation. Everyone is friendly and happy to see you … the ocean is sparkling blue and welcomes surfing, swimming, and fishing… and as we read, the food is oh so delicious! Yes, this is the time of year when everyone takes a moment to be thankful for all the good things happening in their lives: Family, friends, children doing well in school, new talents cultivated over the past 12 months, and recognizing another great journey on the earth as it travels around the sun.

So what are your plans this holiday season? Are you ready to come to Kauai? :-D  Print this story, put it on your refrigerator for the family to see, and click “send” up top to share it with your Friends here on Facebook. You’ll be happily surprised when someone reaches out and says “YES!” – let’s go!
