Celebrating Thanksgiving – Hau’oli La Ho’omaika’i

Thanksgiving on Kauai is one of our favorite times of the year. Family and friends coming together to share stories of “what’s new” in their lives; taking time to reflect on all the things we are grateful for; and taking time to remember all the adventures we have had over the past year. Holiday planning is lots of fun because the fall and winter seasons are always a great time to have a vacation!

Remember planning your last vacation? Think back, now. The preparation of “where should I go” … “what should I do” … the choices … and getting everyone excited about taking time off!? Then your vacation finally arrived and on that first morning you probably awoke thinking, FINALLY – I am here! Should I sleep in?  Exercise? Have a BBQ?  Call my friends? Swim – or should I just kick back and RELAX all day?

That’s exactly how a vacation is supposed to be – especially when you’re on Kauai. And here’s the great thing: we know exactly how to help you get your “vacation on Kauai” plans started, confirmed, and filled with cool ways to Enjoy activities AND relax. So Much to See, Do and Be Thankful For!

Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Located in the upper part of the archipelago, Kauai is known for having some of the world’s greatest beaches (ranked #2 in the world by US News and World Report) in four breathtaking regions. The North Shore has wonderful spas, amazing restaurants, and top-rated Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed golf courses. The East Side is a good central location with miles of white-sand beaches, and beautiful homes and condos that overlook the crystal-blue Pacific Ocean.

On the South Shore, Enjoy family-friendly beaches where you can swim, snorkel, build sandcastles, and relax under the warm tropical sun! Then there’s the West Side, where you can hike Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), explore Kokee State Park, Enjoy fishing expeditions, and so much more!

Kauai has one main highway that connects the West Side with the “end of the road” on the North Shore – and every place you look along the way is simply breathtaking. Waterfalls, lush green valleys, colorful flowers, ocean vistas, and people all around you with BIG smiles on their faces –thankful they are on Kauai!  To learn more about all the great things to see and do, check out our video library here on YouTube.  Be sure to leave us comments … we love hearing from you! Now let’s talk about Thanksgiving!

Hau’oli La Ho’omaika’i

Pronounced “how-oh-lee la ho-o-my-kah-ee” – what a wonderful way to say “Happy Thanksgiving Day!” – and if you have yet to experience a holiday feast Hawaiian-style, here’s a preview of the Yumminess that awaits you!  For starters, one of the traditional ways to cook a turkey on Kauai is in an imu: an underground oven often used to roast pig for luaus. OMG – when you and your family sit down for this year’s turkey, get ready to throw your head back and say YUM! The meat is moist and tender, especially when roasted with lemon, garlic, and pineapple; and basted with soy sauce.

Fans of imu cooking know this turkey dinner doesn't have to be carved because the meat slides right off the bone!

Kauai Thanksgiving dinner often includes fresh fish, Japanese rice, Portuguese sausage stuffing, and Okinawan sweet potatoes. This flavorful mix of traditions blends into a perfect meal that will keep you thinking of Kauai all the way to Christmas! (We are still thinking about how AWESOME last year’s feast was!)

Make Dinner Your Yourself, or Reserve a Table!

When you are staying in a Kauai Vacation Rentals accommodation, you have SO many choices! You can choose from casual locations to more high-end dining. Kauai’s hotels and restaurants are already planning their special Thanksgiving sittings, including the Beach House in Poipu, The St. Regis Princeville Resort, and The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas. You can also shop at the wonderful local farmers markets and prepare your own feast in the comfort of your own home! Whichever you choose, be sure to plan ahead. Many restaurants are booked in advance for specific holiday buffet schedules.

A growing trend is to celebrate on one of Kauai's beautiful beaches. Just pack a picnic basket, grab a few beach towels, and bring your meal (or left overs) down to the sand! Just think… while others are sitting around the table waiting for desert, you’ll be snacking and sunbathing on white sandy beaches!

Another great thing about being on Kauai for Thanksgiving is the way “gratitude” fills every day of your vacation. Everyone is friendly and happy to see you … the ocean is sparkling blue and welcomes surfing, swimming, and fishing… and as we read, the food is oh so delicious! Yes, this is the time of year when everyone takes a moment to be thankful for all the good things happening in their lives: Family, friends, children doing well in school, new talents cultivated over the past 12 months, and recognizing another great journey on the earth as it travels around the sun.

So what are your plans this holiday season? Are you ready to come to Kauai? :-D  Print this story, put it on your refrigerator for the family to see, and click “send” up top to share it with your Friends here on Facebook. You’ll be happily surprised when someone reaches out and says “YES!” – let’s go!

Fall has arrived on Kauai and now is a wonderful time to start planning your next vacation! Yes, the kids are back in school and your ideal getaway begins where location, residence, and fun things to do … all come together as the perfect recipe for an awesome vacation … and Kauai Vacation Rentals is here to help! So go ahead. Let your hair down. Start those thoughts about putting some excitement into your romance, and read on! Kauai is the perfect place to be, share, and fall in love all over again!

Great Places to Feel The Love

Imagine yourself walking on the Hanalei Bay Pier just before sunset. The final rays of sunlight illuminate the water and the view from the Pier is priceless!  On the North Shore, Hanalei is minutes from Princeville where local spas serve up amazing massages and tropical drinks oh so flavorful!  Restaurants in Hanalei are the perfect place for a romantic dinner after watching a magical sunset while breathing in the most amazing tropical air.

In the morning, wake up to the beach on Kauai’s East Side and Enjoy one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Yes, you can definitely plan a picnic on the sand while enjoying the splendid view of clear blue ocean waters.  The waves, the sun, a day of relaxation. WOW! Can you see yourself here?  We can, too! And in the afternoon, explore the shops in Coconut Market Place where you can grab a delicious scoop of Lappert’s Ice Cream. Now that sounds like a Yummy day!

Kauai Chocolate Company

There is something wonderful to be remembered about Kauai, especially when chocolate is involved! Kauai Chocolate Company was founded in 2001 with a mission statement that reads: Dedicated to Producing the Best Chocolates in the Islands. Located in the Port Allen Marina Center at 4341 Waialo Road in Ele'ele … the staff is happy to help box up some chocolate-covered strawberries along with a whole lot of other delicious treats; including square chunks of chocolate sitting on top of macadamia nuts, fudge, toffee sitting under milk chocolate, dark chocolate mixed with Kahlua, and more! Stash them in your picnic basket and surprise your mate with a wonderful burst of amazing Kauai flavor … at the beach, before bed, and first thing in the morning! (Can you tell we love Kauai AND chocolate?)

Share the Love … On the Golf Course!

Here's the scoop on all Kauai's amazing courses:  there are 10 courses at 7 venues. Princeville on the North Shore has the renowned Makai Golf Club at Princeville, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. This masterpiece sits high above the Pacific Ocean and Hanalei Bay and is one of only two golf courses on Hawaii to feature a 27-hole layout.

The Prince Golf Course at Princeville is another magnificent Hawaii golf layout set on 390 acres above Kauai's North shoreline. Also designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course harnesses natural elements including deep ravines, a tropical jungle, streams, and a real waterfall! Says “The back nine starts with the highly creative 10th hole known as 'Burma Road.'

This par-5 turns more than 90 degrees on its dogleg left, with a deep jungle ravine running along its entire left side and protecting the green short and left. Big hitters can have a go at the green on the second shot assuming they hit a long, well placed tee shot to the left side of the fairway.”
That’s definitely a golf course to fall in love with!

Immerse Yourself In All Things Coconut!

This year is Kauai’s 16th annual Coconut Festival, sponsored by the Kapaa Business Association on Saturday and Sunday, 6-7 October, at Kapaa Beach Park on the East Side. Get ready to immerse yourself in all things coconut while learning about the Coconut Coast’s history and the importance of the Wailua River.

The festival offers non-stop entertainment on a main stage, keiki (children's) stage, cooking demonstrations by Kauai's best chefs, the largest gathering of Kauai artisans (featuring certified Kauai-Made Vendors), crafters and Polynesian products, kooky coconut games, pie-eating contests, local folks competing to win a coconut cook-off contest, hands-on activities, an area dedicated to teaching the uses and by-products of this unusual seed, cultural and historical presentations, hands-on activities, and everything you can imagine to eat made with...Coconut!
