Summer is Here: See What's Happening on Kauai in July!
Summer has arrived and the Garden Island is buzzing with excitement! It could be the longer days, the breathtaking sunsets, or the tasty Kauai coffee! One thing for sure… Kauai is "jumping" in July with Independence Day celebrations and a month of music, festivals, and plenty of ways to get your Kauai groove on. Which leads to our question: when do you want to arrive? :-D
This week, with the help of our friends at Kauai Festivals, we are sharing a Summer Tour of fun things happening on the Garden Island. We're talking fireworks, fun, friends, family, and more! All the great things that help create an incredible time during your island getaway. So… are you ready to jump-in? Read on!
Independence Day Celebrations
Celebrating Independence Day on Kauai is fun for everyone. Festivities begin on the West Side at the Stars & Stripes Freedom Celebration on Tuesday, July 3rd. The event is held at Shenanigans restaurant on the grounds of the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands. Several bands including Greenstone Project, Revival, and Anuhea are supplying tunes for an evening of music and dance. Then, get ready for a heart-pounding fireworks display that energizes the skies overhead! Music by The Quake Kauai keeps the fun going at this year's after party. Woo-hoo! This is gonna be fun! The event and parking are free… plus food, games, and craft vendors are on-hand for your Enjoyment
On Wednesday, July 4th, the fun continues at 4th of July on the West Side celebration in Kekaha, where admission and entertainment are free for this community event. If you like to get your "exercise on" in the morning, join The Fun Run and Zumba Fest from 7-9 a.m. They will both help start your day with a smile! ☺ Then, Enjoy a talent show (always FUN!), plus Ohana games, crafts, rides, and a spectacular fireworks show in the evening.
If you are spending your 4th on the East Side, check out the 23rd Annual Concert in the Sky. This awesome party at Vidinha Stadium in Lihue features music by several bands, including Na Leo, Greenstone Project, The Wheels, Ivo Monroe Miller, Rakudo Taiko, and Ori Uvita Tahitian Dance Troupe. Activities include face painting, a silent auction, and nighttime fireworks. Plus, you can get a massage and enter to win a trip to Las Vegas while you're here! (We know… who wants to go to Vegas when you are on Kauai?) Get your tickets at the door… $15 for adults and $7 for children ages 7-12. Wow! What a great number of ways to commemorate the holiday!
Dance, Music, & Cultural Festivals
We love fireworks shows. The excitement on everyone's faces… the powerful lights in the nighttime sky. Fourth of July on Kauai is just the lead-in to so many other great summer activities. This year is the 4th Annual Kauai Kau Wela Summer Festival, which showcases Polynesian dance and Hula on July 6, 7, and 8. By the way, do you know "Kau Wela" means 'summer' in Hawaiian? ;-). Join the event at the Kukui Grove Center in Lihue. It's free! Whoot! ;-)
Watching the entertainment on Kauai is fun… and so is being the entertainment! Are you an aspiring singer, songwriter, and musician? If so, come to the Garden Island and plan your vacation around the Kauai Music Festival Songwriters Conference at the Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue. The event is July 11, 12, 13, and 14; and is an excellent opportunity to expand your songwriting and performing skills. Participate in small group sessions, open mics, workshops, and one-on-one sessions. Best part: receive feedback from award-winning songwriters, Grammy and Emmy-winning producers, TV and Film Music Supervisors, top A&R Executives, and other industry professionals. What a unique, enriching experience to be part of in such a relaxed, positive environment that embodies 'Aloha!' and that's just part of "what" your Kauai vacation can be!
Once your creative juices are flowing, head over to the 2012 Kauai Bon Dance, happening July 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, and 28 in Hanapepe, Lihue, and Waimea. A Bon Dance is a Japanese Buddhist custom, featuring happy music and dancing that celebrates "the presence of our loved ones no longer physically with us." The festivals feature Japanese food and are open to everyone and they are lots of fun!
Is your Kauai visit happening at the end of the July? Visit the South Shore communities of Koloa and Poipu July 20 through 29 and experience the 27th Annual Koloa Plantation Days. We talk about this every year because everyone on the island gets really excited about it. The cultural festival highlights the multicultural history, food, and family-friendly activities that are part of Garden Island's heritage. Have you ever been? Tell us about it on our Facebook page!

Looks like July is the month to go for Kauai festivals. Next year, I will make sure to go in July now that I know this. I love festivals. Seems like this is how you really get a feel for the culture of wherever you're visiting. I think the Bon Dance and the Plantation Days will be at the top of my list. Thanks.
