Mele Kalikimaka - 'Tis the Season for Kauai!

Mele Kalikimaka ... 'Tis The Season - For Kauai!
Can you believe it is Christmas time? It seems like we were just celebrating the start of summer, getting ready for guests from around the world to arrive on the Garden Island for their amazing vacations!  Then, the year kicked into high gear as Kauai Vacation Rentals was featured on HGTV’s “House Hunters on Vacation”; Halloween came and went; and just as we were finishing our Thanksgiving imu turkey dinners – ALOHA! It’s Christmas-time on Kauai and the excitement can be felt everywhere! With so much to prepare for, and so many FUN things to do, we thought to share some of our favorite things about the holiday season on Kauai!

First off, we say Mele Kalikimaka! (which means Merry Christmas!) – and yes, there is a wonderful feeling that comes with giving and receiving gifts. Christmas time on Kauai is also the perfect place to take a moment, breathe in deeply, and reflect on the amazing year 2012 is. And for us at Kauai Vacation Rentals, it is the perfect time to think about the excitement our guests are feeling right now as they are about board their airplanes and fly to Paradise!

This season, Kauai Vacation Rentals is excited to see many familiar faces coming “home” for the holidays – along with new Friends who are bringing their Friends and Families to Kauai for the first time.  And though we don’t have snow covering Kauai’s white sand beaches, we DO have plenty of Christmas spirit and a lot of fun things to do outdoors!  So get your walking shorts packed and grab a new bottle of sunscreen … because it’s time for Christmas on Kauai!

December 7th through the 24th, 2012:  It’s The 16th Annual Festival of Lights

Sponsored by the Hawaii Tourism Board, the 16th Annual Festival of Lights at Kauai's Historic County Building begins with Opening Ceremonies on Friday, December 7th.
This Festival began in 1996 with a focus on preserving Auntie Josie Chansky’s tradition of sharing her Christmas folk art, which she first began sharing 50 years ago.

First on Oahu and then 18 years on Kauai, Auntie Josie opened her home to neighbors, strangers, tourists - everyone and anyone. People just started showing up on her lawn and then at her door. They wanted to see all the Christmas folk art decorations she created and displayed on the outside and inside of her home.  It wasn’t long before Auntie Josie’s home became known as “The Christmas House.”

Generations of families have since made a visit to The Christmas House part of their holiday traditions. Here, they can see favorites such as a Christmas tree made of 7,500 green toothpicks; wreaths formed from egg cartons; table decorations constructed with seed pods; a chandelier fashioned from wire coat hangers; and a must-see decoration titled "Surfin' Santa's Sleigh," which is pulled by a team of wave-riding Kauai roosters.
Festivities begin on Friday the 7th and then the display is open 6 PM to 8 PM Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through December 24th.  For additional information about Kauai's Festival of Lights, visit the official site here!

December 8th, 2012: Kauai's Breakfast with Santa!

We all know Santa lives at the North Pole, but do you know where he likes to eat Breakfast? That’s right! On Kauai!

Come join Santa at Sweet Marie's Hawaii for Reindeer Hotcakes, Santa Hat Fresh Strawberry Waffles, and Story Time With Santa!  Enjoy Candy Cane Mice Ornaments, Crafts, Chocolate Dipped Marshmallow Make and Take, and get your photo taken with Mr. Claus!

There are 3 seating times: 7:30 AM, 9 AM, and 10:30 AM. Reservations are recommended and you can get yours by calling 808-823-0227. Get all the details here!

Sunday December 9, 2012: Let’s Hula for Christmas!

Yes, that’s right! Hula is the theme for Kauai's annual Holiday Hula Christmas Celebration at the Grand Hyatt Kauai in Poipu. The halau is entering its twenty-sixth year with its Hawaiian Holiday Christmas Presentation and this year’s event includes an evening of hula, chant, music, and holiday spirit. With over 150 dancers and musicians in the halau, a great time is waiting for all!

Each year, Kumu Kapu prepares her dancers with a selection of wonderful chants and songs that honor Hawaii’s Ali’i, place names, nature and its elements. Of course, holiday tunes are a must!  Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

Join the festive evening with Halau Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani and their Kumu Hula Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza. Doors open at 5 PM; program begins at 6 PM. Mele Kalikimaka!

December 22nd, 2012: The Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade

Are you ready for the brilliant wonderland of color and the spirit of Kauai fellowship? The annual Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade starts at 6 PM.  Spend the day visiting Waimea’s parks, beaches and hiking trails; browse through Waimea's shops; eat dinner; and stay for the entertainment following the parade at Hofgaard Park.

The Parade is free and visitors are invited to join the colorful community event. Waimea Town, dripping with lights, is a brilliant wonderland of color that serves as a backdrop to the annual Lighted Christmas Parade. After-parade festivities include live, on-stage free music at Hofgaard Park with free beverages, baked goods and treats provided by many WKBPA member businesses.

The parade, held since 1994, begins at Waimea Canyon Park and goes down Kaumualii Highway to Ala Wai Road. It then turns mauka (towards the mountains) to Waimea Road, then back west to end at Hofgaard Park in the center of town. For everyone's safety, no parking is allowed along the Parade Route – and expect traffic into Waimea to be extremely slow. Organizers suggest finding a parade-viewing spot by 4 PM. Parking is easier on the Kekaha side of town, so arrive early!

Celebrating Thanksgiving – Hau’oli La Ho’omaika’i

Thanksgiving on Kauai is one of our favorite times of the year. Family and friends coming together to share stories of “what’s new” in their lives; taking time to reflect on all the things we are grateful for; and taking time to remember all the adventures we have had over the past year. Holiday planning is lots of fun because the fall and winter seasons are always a great time to have a vacation!

Remember planning your last vacation? Think back, now. The preparation of “where should I go” … “what should I do” … the choices … and getting everyone excited about taking time off!? Then your vacation finally arrived and on that first morning you probably awoke thinking, FINALLY – I am here! Should I sleep in?  Exercise? Have a BBQ?  Call my friends? Swim – or should I just kick back and RELAX all day?

That’s exactly how a vacation is supposed to be – especially when you’re on Kauai. And here’s the great thing: we know exactly how to help you get your “vacation on Kauai” plans started, confirmed, and filled with cool ways to Enjoy activities AND relax. It all starts with choosing the days you want to come, then browsing our website and seeing the great selection of homes, condos, cottages, villas, and estates Kauai Vacation Rentals has to offer throughout the island. Kauai has many wonderful places to visit with unique areas to explore (we’ll talk about those in a moment), and that means you and your guests are going to have an exceptional time on the Garden Island.

Then, when you find a cool accommodation you’d like to learn more about, click on that accommodation’s “property inquiry” link at our website and we will help get your vacation plans underway. Ready to find great airfares? Click on over to Kayak.com and enter your local airport code along with the destination LIH. Once you find your airfare, start sharing with your friends, family, and travel companions. Tell them: “we’re going to Kauai for the holidays!” and see how excited they get!

So Much to See, Do and Be Thankful For!

Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Located in the upper part of the archipelago, Kauai is known for having some of the world’s greatest beaches (ranked #2 in the world by US News and World Report) in four breathtaking regions. The North Shore has wonderful spas, amazing restaurants, and top-rated Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed golf courses. The East Side is a good central location with miles of white-sand beaches, and beautiful homes and condos that overlook the crystal-blue Pacific Ocean.

On the South Shore, Enjoy family-friendly beaches where you can swim, snorkel, build sandcastles, and relax under the warm tropical sun! Then there’s the West Side, where you can hike Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), explore Kokee State Park, Enjoy fishing expeditions, and so much more!

Kauai has one main highway that connects the West Side with the “end of the road” on the North Shore – and every place you look along the way is simply breathtaking. Waterfalls, lush green valleys, colorful flowers, ocean vistas, and people all around you with BIG smiles on their faces –thankful they are on Kauai!  To learn more about all the great things to see and do, check out our video library here on YouTube.  Be sure to leave us comments … we love hearing from you! Now let’s talk about Thanksgiving!

Hau’oli La Ho’omaika’i

Pronounced “how-oh-lee la ho-o-my-kah-ee” – what a wonderful way to say “Happy Thanksgiving Day!” – and if you have yet to experience a holiday feast Hawaiian-style, here’s a preview of the Yumminess that awaits you!  For starters, one of the traditional ways to cook a turkey on Kauai is in an imu: an underground oven often used to roast pig for luaus. OMG – when you and your family sit down for this year’s turkey, get ready to throw your head back and say YUM! The meat is moist and tender, especially when roasted with lemon, garlic, and pineapple; and basted with soy sauce.

Fans of imu cooking know this turkey dinner doesn't have to be carved because the meat slides right off the bone!

Kauai Thanksgiving dinner often includes fresh fish, Japanese rice, Portuguese sausage stuffing, and Okinawan sweet potatoes. This flavorful mix of traditions blends into a perfect meal that will keep you thinking of Kauai all the way to Christmas! (We are still thinking about how AWESOME last year’s feast was!)

Make Dinner Your Yourself, or Reserve a Table!

When you are staying in a Kauai Vacation Rentals accommodation, you have SO many choices! You can choose from casual locations to more high-end dining. Kauai’s hotels and restaurants are already planning their special Thanksgiving sittings, including the Beach House in Poipu, The St. Regis Princeville Resort, and The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas. You can also shop at the wonderful local farmers markets and prepare your own feast in the comfort of your own home! Whichever you choose, be sure to plan ahead. Many restaurants are booked in advance for specific holiday buffet schedules.

A growing trend is to celebrate on one of Kauai's beautiful beaches. Just pack a picnic basket, grab a few beach towels, and bring your meal (or left overs) down to the sand! Just think… while others are sitting around the table waiting for desert, you’ll be snacking and sunbathing on white sandy beaches!

Another great thing about being on Kauai for Thanksgiving is the way “gratitude” fills every day of your vacation. Everyone is friendly and happy to see you … the ocean is sparkling blue and welcomes surfing, swimming, and fishing… and as we read, the food is oh so delicious! Yes, this is the time of year when everyone takes a moment to be thankful for all the good things happening in their lives: Family, friends, children doing well in school, new talents cultivated over the past 12 months, and recognizing another great journey on the earth as it travels around the sun.

So what are your plans this holiday season? Are you ready to come to Kauai? :-D  Print this story, put it on your refrigerator for the family to see, and click “send” up top to share it with your Friends here on Facebook. You’ll be happily surprised when someone reaches out and says “YES!” – let’s go!

Ho'i Hou Ke Aloha

Ho'i Hou Ke Aloha - Let Us Fall In Love All Over Again – On Kauai!

Ahhhh … Love!  That feeling that makes your pulse race. The thoughts that make you blush and the little stars that float around your head every time you think about your special someone. Fall has arrived on Kauai and now is a wonderful time to start planning your next vacation! Yes, the kids are back in school and your ideal getaway begins where location, residence, and fun things to do … all come together as the perfect recipe for an awesome vacation … and Kauai Vacation Rentals is here to help! So go ahead. Let your hair down. Start those thoughts about putting some excitement into your romance, and read on! Kauai is the perfect place to be, share, and fall in love all over again!

Great Places to Feel The Love

Imagine yourself walking on the Hanalei Bay Pier just before sunset. The final rays of sunlight illuminate the water and the view from the Pier is priceless!  On the North Shore, Hanalei is minutes from Princeville where local spas serve up amazing massages and tropical drinks oh so flavorful!  Restaurants in Hanalei are the perfect place for a romantic dinner after watching a magical sunset while breathing in the most amazing tropical air.

In the morning, wake up to the beach on Kauai’s East Side and Enjoy one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Yes, you can definitely plan a picnic on the sand while enjoying the splendid view of clear blue ocean waters.  The waves, the sun, a day of relaxation. WOW! Can you see yourself here?  We can, too! And in the afternoon, explore the shops in Coconut Market Place where you can grab a delicious scoop of Lappert’s Ice Cream. Now that sounds like a Yummy day!

Kauai Chocolate Company

There is something wonderful to be remembered about Kauai, especially when chocolate is involved! Kauai Chocolate Company was founded in 2001 with a mission statement that reads: Dedicated to Producing the Best Chocolates in the Islands. Located in the Port Allen Marina Center at 4341 Waialo Road in Ele'ele … the staff is happy to help box up some chocolate-covered strawberries along with a whole lot of other delicious treats; including square chunks of chocolate sitting on top of macadamia nuts, fudge, toffee sitting under milk chocolate, dark chocolate mixed with Kahlua, and more! Stash them in your picnic basket and surprise your mate with a wonderful burst of amazing Kauai flavor … at the beach, before bed, and first thing in the morning! (Can you tell we love Kauai AND chocolate?)

Share the Love … On the Golf Course!

Here's the scoop on all Kauai's amazing courses:  there are 10 courses at 7 venues. Princeville on the North Shore has the renowned Makai Golf Club at Princeville, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. This masterpiece sits high above the Pacific Ocean and Hanalei Bay and is one of only two golf courses on Hawaii to feature a 27-hole layout.

The Prince Golf Course at Princeville is another magnificent Hawaii golf layout set on 390 acres above Kauai's North shoreline. Also designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course harnesses natural elements including deep ravines, a tropical jungle, streams, and a real waterfall! Says GoHawaii.com: “The back nine starts with the highly creative 10th hole known as 'Burma Road.'

This par-5 turns more than 90 degrees on its dogleg left, with a deep jungle ravine running along its entire left side and protecting the green short and left. Big hitters can have a go at the green on the second shot assuming they hit a long, well placed tee shot to the left side of the fairway.”
That’s definitely a golf course to fall in love with!

Immerse Yourself In All Things Coconut!

This year is Kauai’s 16th annual Coconut Festival, sponsored by the Kapaa Business Association on Saturday and Sunday, 6-7 October, at Kapaa Beach Park on the East Side. Get ready to immerse yourself in all things coconut while learning about the Coconut Coast’s history and the importance of the Wailua River.

The festival offers non-stop entertainment on a main stage, keiki (children's) stage, cooking demonstrations by Kauai's best chefs, the largest gathering of Kauai artisans (featuring certified Kauai-Made Vendors), crafters and Polynesian products, kooky coconut games, pie-eating contests, local folks competing to win a coconut cook-off contest, hands-on activities, an area dedicated to teaching the uses and by-products of this unusual seed, cultural and historical presentations, hands-on activities, and everything you can imagine to eat made with...Coconut!

Did You See Our Wonderful Kai Hale on TV?

It was so exciting to watch HGTV’s recent episode of House Hunters on Vacation. The Kyle family from Maryland had the amazing opportunity to come to Kauai and visit our wonderful vacation rental home, Kai Hale. One of the many great parts of the program was seeing the family’s faces light up every time they stepped into another room. And when they realized they were only 15 steps to the beach, we could feel their excitement right through the television!

This got us thinking. Our guests love Kauai so much they often leave us comments on our Facebook page and write us letters saying how much they Enjoy staying at our accommodations. This inspiration got us excited about putting together a collection of “Fun Things Our Guests Say” about the amazing experiences they have with Kauai Vacation Rentals & Real Estate, Inc. For us, it’s like having a living, breathing collection of Fun Memories that we are part of, and excited to share with you in this week’s Feature story. It also lets our other Friends learn first-hand about holidays others are having, so they can start planning an equally great holiday for themselves. And when you are ready to get your travel plans together, remember… we are always here to assist you!

Here on Kauai, vacation memories grow larger the moment you step off the plane. Is it the wonderful tropical air? The vibrant flowers, plants and trees that fill every scene in your holiday? Or could it be the waterfalls, bright blue ocean, and miles of relaxing beaches that help you unwind? Or maybe, just maybe… it is all these things and more! With 34+ years of helping guests create amazing vacations for family and friends, we invite you to close your eyes for a second, then open them up again and get ready for our “Kauai Flashback” – a collection of fun stories from our Friends, starting with…

Kai Hale on Anini Beach

“Wow.” “This place is great.” “Oh my…” These are the resounding comments the Kyle family said when they toured Kai Hale on Anini Beach. Located on Kauai’s North Shore, House Hunters On Vacation called this wonderful place Oceanside Escape. Anini Reef is the second largest reef in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Great for kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, and more. The beach is literally 15 steps from the backyard and no matter which window you gaze out from, you’ll see bright green foliage, colorful flowers, and the breathtaking bright blue Pacific Ocean.

Kai Hale has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and sleeps 6 people on several levels. The stunning home’s sliding glass doors from the living room to the wrap around lanai disappear into the wall, creating the ultimate indoor/outdoor experience. Best part is … You can stay here too! If you didn’t get a chance to see HGTV’s program, take a look at Kai Hale, here!

Look How Beautiful The East Side Is – Especially At Kauai Beach Villas G-20

There is absolutely something amazing about coming to Kauai and staying by the ocean. The waves at night are relaxing, and being moments away from the sand after breakfast is the ideal way to start the day. On Kauai’s East Side, you can spend hours walking on “Ke Ala Hele Makalae,” which means “The path that goes by the coast.” The paved path hugs one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines. Our Friends who stay in Wailua love the East Side, especially when they stay at Kauai Beach Villas G20.

Here’s what they say:“We loved [Kauai Beach Villas] G20 during our recent stay … There's beautiful new and modern furniture throughout … This ground floor corner unit is the perfect oceanfront location where we spent a lot of time sitting on the new lanai furniture watching the sunrise right in front of us … The management company is wonderful and extremely helpful … We will absolutely stay here again soon!! The Kauai Beach Villas complex is immaculately maintained and extremely peaceful!!”
Wow! That makes us want to spend the day in Wailua! You, too? Before we head over, let’s also see what other guests say about…

The Fun That Awaits Us In Poipu – Sunset Kahili #403

Poipu Beach on the South Shore is home to some of Kauai’s greatest beaches: Baby Beach, Brennecke's Beach, Shipwreck's Beach, and more! Poipu is also home to two 18-hole golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and … our wonderful destination, the Sunset Kahili condos. Relax to the sound of waves and tropical breezes from the comfort of your own private Lanai. We are in agreement when we think about how amazing it is to awaken every day and see this view through the window to paradise. Here’s what our recent guests have to say:

“We stayed in [Sunset Kahili] #403 for 2 weeks in June of 2012. Amazing, totally amazing views! From our lanai we could watch the turtles … just a short walk to a fabulous beach. Fully appointed, this condo has it all. Even the bed was comfy. KVR is great to work with, very professional and well, just made our first trip to Kauai incredible!”
What a wonderful thing to hear! This letter really brightened our day and reminded us how fulfilling it is to help people from all over the world find amazing places where they Enjoy well deserved vacations. Kauai Vacation Rentals has something for everyone’s budget throughout the East Side, West Side, South Shore, and the North Shore, too!

Plantation at Princeville 1521

If you love great food, amazing views, golf, massages and more, Princeville on the North Shore is your next vacation destination. Enjoy Hanalei Bay, Haena Beach Park, and Ke’e Beach at the end of the [main] road. Princeville is close to surfing, shopping, and great food; with breathtaking views that greet you around every corner.

And The One That Wins the Prize for Making Us Laugh The Hardest

Hale 'O Ka Nalu Po'i is a vacation home that feels like an amazing dream. It sits on over an acre of land on Kauai’s beautiful South Shore, complete with marble walkways … offering ultimate luxury, comfort, and privacy. Seriously.  Take a look at the photo and ask yourself … when I wake up in the morning, do I want to go for a swim in the pool … Have lunch on the lanai … Explore the tidepools along the coastline … Or relax on the sandy beach and watch sea turtles and dolphins play off shore?

OMG – what will I do tomorrow??

Yes, this is a home every vacationer wants to Enjoy over and over again.  Every day is an exciting adventure when you’re staying at Hale 'O Ka Nalu Po'i.  When we said close your eyes and open them again, imagine opening them and seeing this view every day! And that’s before you even head out to explore the rest of Kauai’s incredible South Shore!  In Poipu, guests Enjoy swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, biking, sailing, fishing, surfing, shopping, tennis, golf, and oh so much more.

So what made us laugh so hard?

Guests from California said, “My sisters and I thoroughly loved this home. It exceeded our expectations. The view from all directions is breathless. I never slept so well! I'll have memories of this home forever."  Guests from Washington said, "Thank you for sharing your exquisite house. Although we've traveled around the world, we've never found a place quite so special. It's a great place to get away from it all."  And the funniest? “Thanks for allowing us to stay at your wonderful home. Sorry for the scratches on the front walkway that I left with my fingernails … They had to drag me kicking and scratching back into the rental car to force me back to the airport for our return trip home to Wisconsin!"

Enjoy a traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar & ukulele concert every weekend in September, where you can "Tune Your World to Aloha" while appreciating the feeling of letting go and easing into Kauai’s relaxing pace. In October, the Kapaa Business Association presents the two-day Coconut Festival with Polynesian and coconut-themed entertainment, food, crafts, games, and contests.  Wow! Dance, Music, & Cultural Festivals
We love fireworks shows. The excitement on everyone's faces… the powerful lights in the nighttime sky. Fourth of July on Kauai is just the lead-in to so many other great summer activities. This year is the 4th Annual Kauai Kau Wela Summer Festival, which showcases Polynesian dance and Hula on July 6, 7, and 8. By the way, do you know "Kau Wela" means 'summer' in Hawaiian? ;-). Join the event at the Kukui Grove Center in Lihue. It's free! Whoot! ;-)
Watching the entertainment on Kauai is fun… and so is being the entertainment! Are you an aspiring singer, songwriter, and musician? If so, come to the Garden Island and plan your vacation around the Kauai Music Festival Songwriters Conference at the Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue. The event is July 11, 12, 13, and 14; and is an excellent opportunity to expand your songwriting and performing skills. Participate in small group sessions, open mics, workshops, and one-on-one sessions. Best part: receive feedback from award-winning songwriters, Grammy and Emmy-winning producers, TV and Film Music Supervisors, top A&R Executives, and other industry professionals. What a unique, enriching experience to be part of in such a relaxed, positive environment that embodies 'Aloha!' and that's just part of "what" your Kauai vacation can be!
Once your creative juices are flowing, head over to the 2012 Kauai Bon Dance, happening July 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, and 28 in Hanapepe, Lihue, and Waimea. A Bon Dance is a Japanese Buddhist custom, featuring happy music and dancing that celebrates "the presence of our loved ones no longer physically with us." The festivals feature Japanese food and are open to everyone and they are lots of fun!
Is your Kauai visit happening at the end of the July? Visit the South Shore communities of Koloa and Poipu July 20 through 29 and experience the 27th Annual Koloa Plantation Days. We talk about this every year because everyone on the island gets really excited about it. New Feature Story: Explore The Ocean With Water Activities!

Enjoy the Water: Summer 2012 is Here!
Stand on the shore of Kauai and look out into the ocean. Watch the waves come in as you feel the surf make its way over your feet. Surfers carry their boards into the water and paddle out in search of the perfect ride; and a group of snorkelers climb into a boat taking them to explore ocean life. Do you see why you're here? Are you ready to join the adventure? Well, get your swim clothes on – it's time to have some FUN in the water!
Part 5 of our "Countdown to Summer 2012" series takes us into summer with 'snapshots' of fun water activities available on Kauai. Today we are showing you some popular places to go snorkeling, surfing, swimming, and fishing, so you already know where you're going and what you're doing by the time you land in Lihue. As you read our Feature story, take note of the KVR Sandcastles. Each highlights special travel tips that make your vacation to the Garden Island unique and memorable. So now that we've put our toes into the water so to speak, let's jump in – shall we? ☺
Snorkeling
The Pacific Ocean is beautiful and majestic. Its waters are cool and vibrant with life. Snorkeling excursions are a great opportunity to get close and personal with Kauai's cast of marine friends! You might catch a glimpse of the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish (left) and see spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, colorful coral, and more! Kauai is home to many snorkeling areas and each one is waiting to be explored. Popular spots for snorkeling include Makua (Tunnels) Beach, Ke'e Beach, and Anini Beach on the North Shore; Lydgate Beach Park on the East Side; and Poipu Beach Park on the South Shore. ( Makua Beach, Lydgate Beach Park, and Poipu Beach Park have lifeguards on duty.) Summer is a perfect time of year to Enjoy the beauty of the ocean with your Kauai travel companions. If you're excited to see what's beneath the ocean surface, click here and view the variety of snorkeling adventures that are available!
Surfing
"Cowabunga dude," it's time to grab your surfboard and paddle out to where the waves break! Kauai is a great location for beginning surfers and expert wave riders alike. One factor surfing depends upon is the current conditions of the water. A beach might have great surfing conditions one day, and the next day the same beach may be more suitable for working on your tan ;-). That's why you want to take a look at the Ocean Report prior to starting your day! (More on that below!) A great summer surfing spot for beginners is Hanalei Bay. Its sandy bottom, gentle swells, and clear waters usually make for an Enjoyable experience. As always, use caution when entering the ocean. Do your best to stay clear of other surfers riding in, talk to lifeguards about current conditions, and Enjoy the thrill of coasting to shore!
Swimming
Want to spend the day playing in the water with your family? Well, round up the kids, pack your beach towels and sunblock, and slip on your sandals… We're going swimming! A day at the beach for a swim is a great way to get the energy flowing. We get to stretch our muscles, feel the sunshine on our shoulders, and share smiles and snacks with loved ones! There are several locations on Kauai great for a taking a dip. Poipu Beach Park, Hanalei Bay, and Lydgate Park all have lifeguards and picnic areas. Build sand castles, read a magazine, and RELAX for a change. Then, you can cool off in the water when you get hot and sandy! And remember: Always use the buddy system when you swim! Sound like a plan? ☺
Fishing
When you want a break from being in the water, how about spending some time on the water? Charter a boat with 5 of your friends and sail out to sea in search of big game fish! The Pacific is bursting with Yellowfin (Ahi), Mahi Mahi, and Blue Marlin near the Garden Island. Bring your camera along and take photos of your 'trophy' fish. And, you'll have a chance to bring back your catch and throw it on the BBQ when you arrive back to your condo, home, or cottage. Water sports are great exercise, and in this case, they feed you too! There are several fishing charters on Kauai to choose from, including Hawaiian Style Fishing and Kai Bear Sportfishing to name a few. Find a fishing trip that suits you and Enjoy the good times!
Ocean Report
What if there was a way to check on the current ocean conditions before you go out on your ocean adventures? Well, there is! The Ocean Report helps prepare us for our experience in the water. It provides daily recommendations for the calmest swimming and snorkeling locations. It reports surf heights, wind speed, and visibility for various popular beaches. Want to know which locations have lifeguards? The Ocean Report has you covered. And the printable version includes important safety tips! Advisories and Warnings are updated on the site daily. We want everyone to Enjoy Kauai.

If yes, let our Kauai Vacation Rentals sandcastles light the 'Tiki Torch' path to an incredible Island Adventure! LET'S GO! ☺
Get Your Gear
When you pack for Kauai, leave your office clothes at home. Island wardrobe should match the freedom and adventure that your vacation brings. Put on a new Aloha shirt, step out into the fresh tropical air, and feel the golden sun kiss your skin! If you need a new holiday outfit, make Shopping your first excursion. It's fun and there are many places where you can get authentic Kauai attire. Find unique gifts and clothes in the small town of Hanalei. Discover colorful Aloha shirts, vintage maps, fine art, and jewelry in Kapaa. Visit country stores and farmers markets in Lihue and Kalapaki, and pick up Kauai crafts and Niihau shell leis in Old Koloa Town.
While traveling into Koloa, enter the town through the "Tree Tunnel," a stretch of Maluhia Road lined with eucalyptus trees planted more than a century ago. Now that you have gifts for yourself AND your loved ones back home… get ready to create more Kauai memories!
Explore the Great Outdoors
Kauai can be explored by foot, by car, and by boat – yet there is something special about riding a horse that brings out the adventurer in all of us. At Silver Falls Ranch near Kilauea, there is an assortment of beautiful horses and the friendly staff will help find one that is perfect fit for you. Then, choose an adventure: Ride to the Silver Falls waterfall for a swim and picnic; escape into Kauai's remote and glorious landscape; and explore Silver Falls' botanical palm garden and wild lands – all on horseback! Giddy up!
Guided Nature Tours
Enjoying the outdoors is a magnificent part of every Kauai vacation. Every time you step out onto the soft, moist earth; feel an ocean breeze tickle your arm; and reach out and touch the vibrant, natural foliage surrounding you – remember life is more than the buildings we live and work in each day. That's why Kauai Nature Tours is so wonderful. They offer "Guided Nature Adventures on the Garden Island" and they help make your Kauai adventure so much more fun! ☺
Choose from several tours, including the "Sleeping Giant Mountain Excursion," the "Waimea Canyon Explorer," the "Mahaulepu Coast Nature Walk," the "Uplands Volcano Mountain Forest Trek," and the "Na Pali Hiking Adventure." Your journey begins when you travel to the trailhead of your chosen tour in a 12-passenger van. Then, 'Adventure Guides' lead you on your tour and teach you about the gorgeous, immense environments you are walking through. These excursions demonstrate safety, care, and education – filled with amazement and wonder. You receive a yummy lunch, snacks, refreshments, bottled water, and a backpack with your tour. For those of us who love the outdoors, this is a beautiful and invigorating way to experience Kauai!
Luau Love
Kauai outdoor adventures are best enjoyed with loved ones and new friends you meet on your journey. On Kauai, we call this celebration a 'luau!' A luau usually features food, entertainment (such as traditional Hawaiian music), and hula. Smith's Garden Luau is a great place to celebrate these traditions. Enjoy Kalua pig roasted in an earthen imu oven. Also on the menu: teriyaki beef, Ono mahimahi, poi, and chicken adobo. Sit back, relax, and take in chants and songs called mele. Try some hula moves and be entertained with Hawaiian hula, Tahitian drum dances, and the Samoan fire knife dance. Ahhh… What a way to experience life! After all, what's summer without a luau?!!
